Glass-makers from all over Europe imitated glass made “à la façon d’Altare”, the glass worked by artisan craftsmen in Altare, in the mountains behind Savona. The “dry”, almost minimal, forms that they produce today are often accompanied by colorful blown glass or cut crystal. Genoa, Savona, and Albisola are also centers of excellence for ceramics. Classic blue, or futurist, calligraphy, or even raku, all stand out for the quality of material used and the excellence of their craftsmanship. The world’s best slate, another indigenous Ligurian material, is extracted from quarries in Tigullio, Val Fontanabuona and the Valle Argentina. Traditionally used for roofing, stairs, and flooring, it is now also a soft sculptural stone for the decorative arts. Glass, ceramics, and stone form part of the “Artigiani In Liguria” quality trademark.
