FROM ORIENTAL INFLUENCES TO FUTURISM AND BEYOND

The history of ceramics in Liguria has always been strongly influenced by external influences, from maritime trade with the Middle East and China in its early days, in the 16th century, to the systematic welcoming of eclectic and innovative artists, hosted in the workshops of craftsmen, mainly from Albisola but also from Savona and Genoa. This interweaving of cultures and techniques generated its own identity and unrivalled products in majolica and porcelain. Current production in Liguria, in particular in the district of Albisola, a town just a few kilometres from Savona and Genoa, is the daughter of this culture of learning and experimentation and does not betray the deep harmony with changing needs and tastes, without giving up the style and elegance of all time. The most famous decorations of the historical-artistic evolution are the "White Blue" developed in the 17th century (the human figure placed in a landscape usually in the foreground with bushes and small rocks), the 'Calligraphic Naturalist' (orientalised animal and plant motifs later superimposed on western motifs such as castles and churches), the 'Levantine' (sketched drawings of tiny figures, animals and landscape elements) and the 'Boselli' (the decoration of an object hinges on a bunch of flowers dominated by a tulip or a rose). In the first half of the last century Albisola and its ceramics gained international fame with the publication of the 'Futurist Manifesto of Ceramics and Aeroceramics' signed by Tullio d'Albisola and Tommaso Marinetti. Since that moment, 1938, Albisola has been a place frequented by artists and ceramists from all over the world.
